Your Room-By-Room Guide to Household Pests

You expect the exciting aromas from your kitchen to attract insect invaders. But what about the other areas of your home? Food isn't the only draw for some types of pests. If you're not sure how to protect spaces outside of the kitchen, take a look at what you need to know about pest problems and the rest of your home.

The Bathroom

What types of pests lurk in your home's bathroom? The damp, humid environment is ideal for water-loving invaders that thrive in warm temperatures. According to the National Pest Management Association (NMPA), the top bathroom pests are:
  • Ants. Pharaoh and carpenter ants prefer watery or humid environments. The shower, sink, or a leaky toilet provide the setting these pests need to survive. Add in wooden cabinets and baseboards, and the bathroom becomes an attractive spot for ants to nest.
  • Silverfish. Like ants, these gray metallic fish-like bugs enjoy dampness. Instead of wooden areas, look for these pests near sink or shower drains or in other water-logged areas.
  • Cockroaches. Even though cockroaches enjoy your leftover scraps and other kitchen trash, they also favor dirty, damp drains.
Whether you have ants, silverfish, cockroaches, or another pest problem in your home's bathroom, you need professional help to eliminate the invasion. A pest control technician can assess the issue, recommend a treatment plan, and continue regular maintenance to prevent a re-infestation.

The Bedroom

Unlike the bathroom, bedroom-loving bugs don't invade the room to find a moisture or water source. These pests prefer the cool, dry, and often warm environment of your sleeping area. Even though spiders, ants, and some other pests are found in bedrooms, bed bugs are top concern for homeowners.

Bed bugs are common invaders. Ninety-seven percent of pest control professionals report that they've treated structures for these invaders within the last year, according to the NPMA's 2018 Bugs Without Borders survey. If you suspect you have bed bugs:
  • Inspect everywhere in the bedroom. Even though the word bed is in the name, bed bugs also live in other pieces of furniture, behind wall outlets, on curtains, in baseboards, or almost anywhere else they can hide.
  • Contact a professional. Bed bugs are notoriously tricky to fully eliminate. Your best chance at a complete extermination is to hire a professional.
  • Schedule routine maintenance. If you have concerns about a bed bug re-infestation, protect your home with preventative services from a professional exterminator.
Not only can a professional pest control contractor eliminate bed bugs and protect your home from another invasion, but they can also inspect your bedroom for other insects to exterminate.

The Playroom

Your child's playroom is prime space for an insect invasion. What makes this area extra-appealing to pests? Between the thick fibers of the carpeting, upholstered furniture, and storage spaces, pests have plenty of places to hide. Add in warmth, leftover cookie crumbs, and a stray juice box, and you have a recipe for a pest problem.

Whether your home's playroom has spiders, ants, cockroaches, or another pest:
  • Call a professional. A pest control contractor isn't only necessary for bedroom bed bug removals. The exterminator can inspect and eliminate playroom pests as well.
  • Stay away. Don't allow your child children play in the room until the pest control professional gives the go-ahead. Some pests, such as ticks, carry diseases.
  • Prevent future problems. Keep the space clean and food/beverage-free. Remove trash promptly. Even though the paper scraps from your child's art project may not seem like a problem, they could attract pests.
A professional exterminator can help you to maintain a pest-free playroom. Talk to the technician about ongoing maintenance and child-safe ways to reduce or eliminate the pest population in your home.
