An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, as the saying goes. This applies to pest control and your home as well. The simplest and most effective way to keep your home pest-free is to take preventative measures. Working with a pest control company, and doing your part as well, will keep pests out of your home.
Keep Your Home Clean
The most important thing you can do to help reduce pests in your home is to keep the home clean and free from things like crumbs and uncovered food. Wiping down the countertops after preparing a meal, emptying the crumbs from the toaster and putting it away, and putting food in airtight containers will help keep bugs and vermin away because the food will no longer attract their attention.
The areas where you prepare and eat food are the most important, but you should also vacuum carpets regularly and clean the rest of the home.
Protect Pet Areas
Another area of concern and a route of transport for pests in your pets. Pets go outside several times a day, and while they are out, they can pick up bugs in their coats. For the bugs, it is a free ride into the home; for you, it means more work getting rid of the bugs.
The best way to reduce the risk of pests like sand flees coming in with your pup is to make sure your dog is treated properly. However, if pests do get in, regular vacuuming will help to pull bugs and eggs from the carpets.
You should also keep pet food areas clean and make sure you store dry food like kibble in an airtight container to keep bugs out. Some pests are attracted to pet food, and the smell can attract them if the food is left open.
Reduce the Paths In
Bugs and vermin find ways into a home or building in some of the most unexpected ways. Small openings around a plumbing pipe can be enough for most bugs and even some small mice to get through. To prevent pests from entering, fill cracks or openings like these with calking. For larger openings, stuff the hole with steel wool or cover it with very fine mesh so that bugs can't get through.
Check for cracks around windows, doors, and other areas that allow critters to sneak in, and seal them. Your local pest control company can help with this process.
Work With a Pest Control Company
If you live in an area that has a regular problem with bugs and pests in homes, pretreat your home for pests before they become a problem. Call your local pest control company, and have them come to your home to talk about preventative measures that they can offer you.
Most pest control companies can tailor your treatment and pretreatment plan to your home and the known pests in that area. They are the experts. Let the pest control company know if you see specific pests, and then let them tell you what they feel will work best for your home.
Keep in mind as you set up the service that pest control is not a one-time treatment. In order to keep the pests out of the home, the company will have to maintain treatments on the home regularly for you.
